Default 98 Tiburon Rough Idle/Stalls

Hello All

I have a 1998 Tiburon, 2.0 (f), manual trans, 71k
PROBLEM: Idles rough (surges 700-1k rpm). Has a slight hesitation on take off and while driving, the engine just dies. Sometimes it happens on surface streets, sometimes on the freeway.

I have just finished replacing the timing belt, water pump, fuel filter, air filter and cleaned and re-gapped the plugs. The problem(s) have not changed.

ANY help would be GREATLY appreciated !!!!

so it had the problems before the work? if so are you throwing any codes? might be maf, tps, coil pack or the first o2 sensor. If your check eng light is on go to the auto parts store and get the codes read.

Yes, the problem was there before all the work was done. This car was purchased new and has never coded. I find that quite odd. A problem this severe and no code(s). The engine light does work, when the key is turned on, and goes out after it starts.

I think it may be 1 of the 3 wires going to the tps? I touched the wires, and the engine almost died. Looking for a new connector without replacing it end to end. I thank You PP for taking the time to help me!!!!!!!

If you pull off the connector and look at it with the tab up you have 3 female pins from left to right 1 is the signal check for an open by probing that pin and the #73 pin on ecu, make sure multimeter ison ohms/ resistance, makesure their is continuity.
next pin 2 this is ground, probe this pin with meter and other meter probe to body ground, make sure their is continuity
Last is pin 3 power, their should be 4.8 to 5.2 volts
