Default ELANTRA 2002 engine reving out of control at start-up

Hi Everyone,

I am seeking help in order to resolve a problem on an ELANTRA 2002 , 2.0ltr with manual gearbox. Out of the blue earlier today the engine has start reving as high as 4000 to 5000 rpm upon start up without getting back to iddle. I would help or hints as where to investigate. I had to stop the engine at every trafic light all the way back home. I am suspecting the throttle posistion sensor for the time being. I have removed the engine plastic cover to disconect some of the plugs, and when I did unpluged the sensor, the engine was revolving (up & down, up and down) erraticaly but lower than with the sensor on. Any suggestion would be much apreciated. Thank you in advance.

I do hear a hissing noise. I can not locate precisely where though.

Get an empty Windex bottle (a common household spray bottle) and fill it with water. Start up the engine. Spray around the intake liberally with the water until the engine slows down a little. You should be able to pinpoint the leak this way. Works great.

Thank you Stinton,

Apparently if there is a leak it might be in a hard to see place. I unpluged the sensor on the top of the intake. If I have this plug on the engine will rev above 4 to 5 K rpm still. I have no clue at what is going on. The hissing noise I hear may be normal has it is stronger when the engine get near the staling point when the plug is off. Water has shown nothing yet but it might be leaking at the back under close to the firewall.

Thanks again

Try taking out the air filter box, and cover the rubber intake with your hand. If there is no leaks, then you should be able to shut down the motor when it gets starved for air.
