Default 02 1.6 ltr accent bizarre arching spark at crank pulley??

I have a 2002 ,1.6 ltr accent that is building a charge while running that is causing it to "arch" an easily visibleblue spark (visible in a dark garage) about every 10 to 15 seconds while the engine is running?? The archs are occuring on thecrank mountedbelt drive pulley.

It's such a chargebuildup that it actually snaps (audibly)like an airplane engine ignitor!! It's quite a loud pop that it makes (that's how I noticed it and went looking for it in the first place).

I checked continuity from the engine block to the Neg side of the battery and it's good? Not sure where to check first otherwise so I thought I'd see if anyone on this BB had seen this issue before....

Does anyone have any insight on this problem?? Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you for your time!

Is the arcing anywhere near the plug wires? Could it be bad wires? Barring that, you may want to put additional ground wires from your block to your frame.

never seen that yet but on some 2.7 engines it was know for the drive belts to arch and cause the cars to misfire. if it helps you probably want to change drive belts.

my god that is bizarre. i've never heard of anything like that. only thing that comes to mind is somehow building up static charge with the belts?

Default solution

I had same problem : sparking between crank and engine block due to static .... change your alternator belt

my old belt is thinner and look like plastic compare to the oem
