2004 Hyundai Accent Axle Repairs
Hello all,
I recently took my 2004 Hyundai Accent on a roadtrip where I logged 1900 miles in six days (hitting 135,000 in the process). Unfortunately, before I left on the trip, my car was making squeaking and grinding noises that only got worse and worse as the trip progressed. (I had the car inspected before departure by two different mechanics, both of whom could not properly diagnose the problem--they each claimed a belt was causing the issue, but that clearly wasn't the case.) By the time I finally got my car back to Brooklyn (just barely), the vehicle was clunking and grinding at peak volume--it sounded like I was dragging another vehicle underneath it. I had USAA tow it to the nearest Hyundai dealership. After inspection, the mechanic told me the entire front axle was corrroded and had possibly suffered impact. It will need to be replaced along with all related parts. Here is the estimate and itemized list of replacement parts:
54503-25A00/ BALL JOINT KIT-RR SUSP CTR/ $40.81
51716-25000/ KNUCKLE-FR AXLE RH/ $357.92
51720-25000/ BEARING-FR WHEEL HUB/ $117.21
51718-1C010/ RING-SNAP/ $10.09
51750-25001/ HUB ASSY-FR WHEEL/ $138.48
51712-25061/ DISC-FR WHEEL BRAKE/ $70.28
49500-25511/ JOINT ASSY-CV LH/ $667.80
Total price on all parts listed/ $1,472.87
Total price on parts listed with tax/ $1603.59
Labor/ $699.99 (6.36 hrs.) @rate $110.00/hr.
Total with parts and labor (before tax) $2,172.86
Total with parts and labor (after tax $2,365.71
If repairs declined, a diagnostic charge will take effect.
$110.00 for electrical, and $110.00 for mechanical (disassembly)
Total diagnostic charge $220.00 plus tax. If repairs agreed upon,
diagnostic fee, will be voided. All focus will be on parts and labor.
This quote seems high to me. I realize that dealerships tend to charge more than your average repair shop, but can anyone tell me what would be a reasonable fee to pay for these parts and labor? I am wondering if it's worth it to pay for the diagnostic and a tow to another shop. What do you guys recommend I do?

$2,365.71 is ridiculous. Take it to an independent shop. That parts list looks like they are just guessing at the problem. If they are willing to tell USAA you hit something then turn it in and just pay your deductible.
