Post 2009 Hyundai Accent Jerky A/T (Automatic Transmission)

Hello Everybody,

I’m new to this forum, and I hope someone will be able to help me, and I’ll be very grateful for the help. I had my Accent Hyundai two years ago and the car is still like I got it yesterday, everything is intact, Imagine the plastic bags are still on the seats, I’m really taking care of the car. But since the odo-meter of the car read 20000km the jerky transmission problem appeared. The problem was occurring rarely at the beginning, but as I reached 40000km it turned to happen more frequently at a rate of approximately two times per trip (long trips I mean more than 80 km). From my observations 30 km at least, I didn’t have this problem for trips less than 30km. The car is under warranty for 100000km/ 5yrs for which comes first the warranty would expire, the odo-meter now reads approximately 43000km, some of you would say, why don’t take it the agency and they will solve the problem for you , well I did it take to the agency and I left the car with them for more than 10 days and then they called and said “the electronic and mechanical checkup didn’t show any problem”, in short they said ”the problem didn’t show up with us”. Well I know what they are doing they are avoiding repairing as long as it is under warranty. Anyway, I don’t want to get my car screwed as I wait for these idiots.

I will explain the problem briefly, the car is running smoothly in the highway, and when the speed is like 110-120 km and I step on the acceleration pedal to get over some trucks on the road the transmission normally shifts from the higher gear to lower one ( in my case from 4th to 3rd), normal car would shift smoothly, but in my car it shifts terribly, I don’t know how explain, It is like the transmission hesitates to change, a loud sound is coming out the car like a metal is banging and all car body vibrates and momentarily I lose the car response to the acceleration pedal this is one case. The other case when I decelerate the, the this problem showed up recently, when I decelerate form a high speed like 110-120 to make a turn, and after a left my step from the braking pedal and hit the acceleration pedal the car does the move, the transmission hesitates and bang sound is coming out of the car.

Now I know that’s a long description, but I wanted you to get the full picture, good detection comes from good description of the problem. Thank very much Hyundai forum for this nice website, and I hope I was good in describing the problem

given that you are under warranty and the stealership are being tools, it makes it a difficult situation to handle. my first instinct is to find another dealership to work with. remember, you want to use that warranty for what it's for! the last thing you want is an expensive repair bill from a transmission shop when you should have it covered.

if you must deal with those idiots to get your warranty, here's how i'd go about it: find a good transmission shop and have them do a diagnosis only. let them find the problem and get it in writing. if you have a certified mechanic stating that you have a problem it makes it very hard for those tools to deny it. take that to them, talk to their service manager and make very clear that you are not happy with their service and their inability to diagnose an obvious transmission problem. if they still want to be jerks talk to corporate. at the very very worst if they won't do anything, i'd look into taking it to a 3rd party transmission shop again and have them repair it. then sue hyundai in small claims court for the repair. just document everything so you can prove that they are not doing their job. you'd have to do a bit more research on this route, but its a possibility and i'd like to think that you would win that case. comes down to hyundai not honoring their warranty due to inept mechanics. its their responsibility to train them and since they can't fix it therefore that has not been done. most mp3 players have a voice record option. stick it in your pocket on record. a shop is a public place of business so you shouldn't be violating any privacy laws.

to start with in the diagnosis process, i'd check your fluid. get the car hot and check the fluid level. then, put some on your fingers. note the colour - should be a cherry red, not brown of black. next rub it between your fingers, should feel smooth and not gritty. finally, smell it. should not smell burnt. smells kinda like well....oil. if any of these simple tests don't seem right you have a transmission problem. at that low mileage it would normally mean that there is something wrong with the transmission itself and a simple fluid flush won't fix it, but you can always try.

Thank you very much zero_gravity, I really appreciate your help looks like I am going for third party shop checkup and then do what you told me. You know when I went for the car after the ten days checkup at the agency I demanded a copy of the checkup reports and you know what they said, they said "we can't give a copy of the tests reports, our policy contradicts with that, and our checkups reveal no problems". anyway I'll keep fighting for my rights. thanks

just dont give up on that warranty because of a few clowns - its far to valuable! especially if you're having trouble with the tranny...i prefer real women myself but to each their own!

SolidSnake read the tranny trouble thread, same issues myself and RaceMoney are having. It only happens after highway driving for atleast 1/2hour. When the transmission goes to downshift the torque convertor lockup is fine but the full downshift into 3rd is when my little car wants to lock the drive tires up. Again make sure the dealership is adding the problem to the Hyundia Database. When I had my car in to the shop they did a search on the Accent and could not find any of the same complaints. Thinking from seeing the kms you are in the great white north, my dealership explained the transmission fluid hyundia uses isn't designed for the Canadian winters. Problem with that is the issues I have are during the summer when its not f*cking snowing.
