Default Advice? Considering synthetic, now at 88,000 km

Great forum!

I recently inherited a '95 Accent. It has been running reg. oil since day 1.

I would like to prolong the life of this car as much as I can.

I gather that switching to synthetic may prolong the engine life. Thoughts?

Also, switching to synthetic at this mileage - anything I might want to watch out for? (filter clogging? maybe?)

I have owned a car for all of 2 months. Very glad I found this forum.

Thanks for any advice you can give - much appreciated.

Dan

Don't do it. We've had posters with the same situation, they switch to synthetic, it loosens up the gunk in the motor, and clogs ports in the valves. You get a valve tap where none existed before.

Just change your oil every 5000 KMs and drive slowly.

Thanks, appreciate it. I'll stick with dino oil then.

Any advice on oil filters?

Thanks again,

Dan

^^^ Both posts are totally untrue and myths about modern synthetics. Older synthetics did cause leaks because additives to help seal gaskets weren't in the formulas. Modern synthetics will not cause problems.

Dan, YES, switch to a quality synthetic and you will be able to extend your oil chane intervals. You will not create any new problems that don't already exist in your engine with standard oil.
