I bought my 2003 Accent GL(auto)brand new in March 2003. A few months after we bought it, it started taking a few seconds to engage Drive from either Park or Reverse. So, if you back up, stop, and put it in Drive, sometimes it will take 2-3 seconds to engage the gear. However, if you don't wait for the gear to engage and you hit the gas, it will jerk when it finally does engage.

The dealer said it shouldn't be a problem, but I made them change the tranny fluid and filter (on their dime) to ensure that the fluid wasn't the issue. It keeps happening once in awhile, but I've gotten used to it.

Normal engagement lag cold shoud be 1.5 seconds or less any more and you have a problem.

I just got an '01 Hatchback GS model with 48K miles.

I can tell you the transmission SHOULD NOT jerk when you shift from park to either R or D. Mine is barely perceptible, I can't even tell it shifted into gear, it's so smooth.

Also, there should be NO lag. Mine goes into gear instantly even cold and takes off right away. Perhaps you have a problem of some sort?

I had my transmission fluid and my filter changed today, make sure you get this done at the dealer because you have to use the proper Hyundai fluid. Other fluid can do more damage.

I have also noticed a "lag" on our '06 Accent when cold. After its warm there is still a lag, but not as bad. Its got 19000 miles. At 20000 its going in for a tranny service. The tranny on the 06 model seems very indecisive at times as well. I don't know if its the nature of the beast or what. It gets annoying.
Maybe any techs out there can help.

I had a similar thing in my '05

I jerked when it went into drive.

Then it would occasionally jerk when shifting gears. Not fun at 50 or 60 mph.

Suddenly it seemed like it wouldn't even use 1st gear at all. Like it would go right to second, the acceleration was bad. I shifted to 2 just to get it to accelerate faster then shifted back into D.

I finally took it in and the speed sensor was replaced. It was covered under warranty.

This all happened somewhere around 40,000 - 45,000 miles.
