Default car didnt want to start, need help badly plz!

this issue has been going on for over a year now and i can't make sense of it. if anyone has ANY ideas at all, i'm in need of them! actually this has been a minor issue since i bought the car near 2 years ago and today was the last straw.

here's the beef:
2004 accent GSi, 1.6L, manual.

- i spent near 10 minutes cranking the engine over to get it to start today. it wouldn't do a thing, not even try just crank. as if you have no plugs or fuel. no DTC's regarding this. it was a bit damp out today, this seems to be what sets it off but not always. it does not normally do this even when damp, just the odd time it gives me **** over it. it has also occured in extreme cold.

- don't know if this is related, but i'm going to guess so. when i fill up the gas tank - usually from around the half way mark - i get the ECU reporting cyl. 1 misfire. always cyl. 1. i cannot feel a thing, car runs normally but ECU still reports this briefly then goes away. does not happen every time, but it is more often than not.

my steps:

-new NGK plugs, gapped tigher (.035")
-new NGK wires
-tested coils with multimeter
-tested coils for seal problems by misting lots of water on them
-compression test
-checked connectors to coils for corrosion, cleaned ground wire on coils
-listened to injectors with mechanics stehescope

all tests/fixes are fine. at one point i had some very minor trouble with noticeable misfires while driving. that has been completely repaired with the new plugs and wires. coils test out OK. cannot find fault with injectors.

during a 'no start' it will suddenly kick into life every time. once it does that, runs as normal no problems.

one last note - after a long journey when i get out of the car (can only notice in quiet areas) and its turned off i was hearing a whirring noise from the back...strange. at first i thought it was a strut, but now i think its the fuel pump running for a short time after the car is turned off. i would assume that is normal and only for cooling the pump after a hard workout, but i am not sure. confirmation would be helpful.

at this point i need ANY ideas you guys have. also i can't find any good info on the fuel and injector system on HMA, so if anyone can find that i would also be greatful.

thanks.

Common problem crank sensor. Next time it wont start unplug crank sensor then plug back in have seen corrosion in it also. Now as for the gas fill up and misfire thing ...hmm coinsidence maybe. Check that crank sensor seen hundreds same thing sometimes no code sometimes has one.

hey just wanted to say thanks, i will give that a try next time i have an issue. i think my car has a gremlin hiding in the airbox or something...tosses a little wrench in every now and then.

so now i'm down to two possibilities. one is fuel pump wiring issue - guess that is my cause of the filling up misfire thing. more of a phantom problem, i cant even feel it and does it affect driveability. only thing i can think of is something inside the tank - nothing else is affected when filling! strange part is it always reports cyl. 4 as misfire....wtf.

i will try the CPS thing you have described, i'll take any possibilities i can get. problem is that this is so rare it'll be months before i get the chance to try it.
