Fuel Pump Relay Problem

Fuel Pump Relay Problem
Hi There,
I have a 1997 Excel (Accent) that won't pump fuel. The fuel pump tests fine, but there is no power to it with the ignition in the on position. The control and pump relays have both been changed. I have 12 volt power at terminal 1 on the pump relay harness, but only 6 volt across terminals 1 and 3 of the pump relay harness. Is this normal, or do I have a problem here. Thanks for looking at my post. Any help appreciated.
Yarraman.

RE: Fuel Pump Relay Problem
Sounds like a bad ground coonection. The service site schematic indicates only two grounds are involved with the pump, pump relay and control relay. "G06" is in the trunk, but with the pump running when you run a jumper from the battery to the fuel inspection pump connector, that tells me G06 is OK. The other ground lead connection, G09, is located on top of the engine (see attachment). Since it is exposed to the elements in the engine bay, I would suspect it first anyway.

RE: Fuel Pump Relay Problem
Hi,
Thanks Ken99 for the info on the bad ground connection. I will check G09 as suggested. By the way, I couldn't find the fuel pump test connector on this car in the engine bay, so I wired the pump with power direct from a 12 volt source. I will try and find the G06 you mentioned also. If you read this, you might be kind enough to point me in the right direction. Thanks very much for answering my post. Cheers.

RE: Fuel Pump Relay Problem
The test connector provides a place to bypass the relays and provide direct power to the pump through the harness.

The diagram indicates G06 is for the 3 door with G15 similar to G06 in the other versions (I guess).

RE: Fuel Pump Relay Problem
Update
The car is an Australian 3 door hatch.
I don't have a fuel pump test connection where indicated in your picture.
Cleaned and tightened Go6 and G09 but no difference.
Point of interest maybe:
With the ignition off I have 12 volt power at the control relay harness terminal 4 & 5.
I also have 12 volt power across terminals 5 & 1 and 5 & 3 with the relay plugged and unplugged. Don't know if this is normal or not.
Thanks for all your help so far ken99, and your quick replies.

RE: Fuel Pump Relay Problem
Here are the schematics to the control and fuel pump relay:

When checking voltage coming out of the fuel pump relay, try testing between the connector and ground.

RE: Fuel Pump Relay Problem
A couple of points of interest maybe:
With battery power to the fuel pump test connection, the pump shoots a very decent stream of fuel.
With the starter engaged and engine turning over the fuel delivery is a lot less.
I hooked up the fuel line and the engine starts, but runs very rough when idling. There is a severe flat spot on acceleration, and seems to be misfiring.
I now have full battery power at the fuel pump while the engine is running. But still nothing when the key is first turned to the "on" position.
I assumed the Accent was like other fuel injected cars, and applied power to the pump on ignition to prime the fuel pressure.
Sorry if I have mislead anyone here.
Thanks for all your help so far ken99, but I don't know what other information to give you.
The car has just had a full service. New plugs and leads fitted and filters changed. Also a new timing belt fitted and injectors cleaned.
I am struggling through this mainly because I live way out of town on a farm, and to get someone to come out is going to cost an arm and a leg just to diagnose the problem...maybe.
If we are at a dead end, so be it. But I am truly greatful for all your help and advice. Much appreciated.
