I'm New and would like any help anyone can give me. My 16 year old has a 99 Accent with 101000 on it. The auto tranny will not shift to overdrive and about red lines between 1 and 2. Also he has no reverse. I have drained the fluid and replaced the filter and put in New Hyundai fluid. No change. Just wondering if their is a sensor or switch to check with these problems. The dealer is 90 miles away and I would like to do this myself if possible. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the site!!!!

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but from my personal expierence, automatic transmission not shifting + 100,000 on the odometer = dead tranny. They all seem to go right about at that point, give or take a few exceptions. Even if most of the transmission is fine but they have to drop it out of the car and dismantle the thing to fix it, you're better off replacing the thing. I had to do so with my last car a few years ago and after hunting around, I found a shop in my local area that only sells and installs used Asian import (Japanese and Korean) engines and transmissions. I saved about $500 and they did grade A work. Most major cities have a shopt like that now. The worst part for you is that it looks like you just went over the powertrain warranty. You've also got to decide whether or not it's worth the cost. A compact car that's seven years old with over 100K on it isn't going to draw much resale, even if it's in mint condition. If the tranny is dead, the repairs will cost you about as much as the car is worth. Then again, if you can get 2-3 more good years out of it by fixing it, it's a helluva lot cheaper than a new car. Of course, you already know all this but it's my two cents.

 

Thanks for the input. I'm glad that my instincts were not alone. I know it is bad news but I did find one out of a totaled car for $575.00 and am considering trying to replace it myself. I'm 50 miles to a major city and commuting is popular and the car is very clean. Does this price sound ok?? Thanks again.

$575 isn't bad at all. How many miles are on it and is there any kind of warranty? You just don't want to be dealing with this again in six months, but if the tranny is in good shape, that's a steal.

 

The tranny has 76000 on it and it is good. I am picking it up tomorrow and installing on Sunday if possible. Then my kid wants to sell it. Any good tips on removal and replacement would be appreciated. Thanks again for the reassuring thoughts and guidance.
