power steering pump squeeks

power steering pump squeeks
I purchased a 2002 accent from my neighbor last week and the power steering squeeks. The pully stops spinning when you turn the wheel and squeeks very loudly. The belt is tight and there does not appear to be anything leaking. The fluid is full as well. If this is just the power steering pump then I think it will be a fairly easy fix; however if this is the rack and pinion I know it will require a lot more knowledge. Please help with the diagnosis. Thanks everyone for your help a head of time.

Tightening the P/S pump belt is all and well.... but you NEED to verify that the alternator-water pump belt is good and tight..
The P/S belt is powered by the water pump belt which has minimal surface area grip with the pulley, so if belt is loose, the P/S pump does not get full power applied to it, stalling the pump pulley as described.

isnt the waterpump pully powered by the timing belt?..mine is making the same noise..we just had the timing and all asc. belts changed..i tightend the p/s belt to no avail..it didnt make that noise before..so im stumped..i dont like putting too much tension on the pulley..may cause stress on the waterpump bearings...maybe......but the p/s pump pulley only has issues when the engine is cold..after a few miles..no issues...

No. Drive belt runs crank, water pump, alternator.. raise hood and look.

Gots to make sure waterpump/alternator belt is tight, tighten P/S all you want,, wont do any good if source of drive power is loose/slipping.
i tightend the p/s belt to no avail..it didnt make that noise before..

The water pump shaft has a heavy 2 row ball bearing on it

Think about this one... cold rubber has no grip... hot rubber gets soft and has better friction co-efficient... look at drag racers when the burn out, get the tire rubber hot, they will grip better when load applied (launch).

..Mine is a 2001. 1.6L..i half looked at the mechanic doing the work and yes everything is driven the way you stated..i stand corrected..the waterpump is in the same place as the timing belt so i was wrong...,,I havent purchased a manual for the car yet..as i just purchased it in the last 2 weeks...im sure the timing belt and accessory belts were original..90,000 miles...and they didnt squeak..the timing belt looked good and the assc. belts were cracked and worn badly....when the noise is made...i can see the p/s belt hopping on the pulley..its super tight now..its not the other drive belts..yes i did notice how sturdy the waterpump assy. is....but i didnt want to take the chance....i can always make it tighter..but ive never had this problem before in any vehicle...the belt should be tight enough..ill take another look at the other belts....the pulleys for the other belts are the ribbed type(flat)..but the p/s pulleys are v shaped for a v-cogged type belt which it has..a flat belt wouldnt work..

I tightened the power steering pump belt and the other belt on the same pulley and the squeal is gone.....the belt is tighter than any other car ive owned in memory....but,,,maybe it has to be that way....just weird the old belt was warn and cracked and looser than the new belt...and that one made no noise....but anyway,,,,problem solved
