Default Sputtering

Hi, I'm new to this forum and I'm just looking for a little insight before I take my car into my mechanic.

I've got a 2000 accent w/ approx. 105000 mi. and its been running fairly decently up until recently. I've had an exhaust problem for about a week that I was planning on getting fixed later this week, but when I left for work this morning, the engine started sputtering, I noticed my tank was pretty low and was passing a gas station, so I pulled in and filled up thinking maybe it was gas related, but when I took off again it kept sputtering and then the check engine light started flashing.

I know the flashing engine light is bad news, but I'd like to know what to possibly expect when I take it to my mechanic today. And I'm thinking I should probably have it towed there, since the engine light is flashing.

I wouldn't take it to the mechanic just yet. Check engine light is not really bad news, it means there is a trouble code available for you to read, the trouble code normally gives specific information for your problem. I'd take it to Autozone or Advance Auto Parts for a free trouble code scan. Write down the code and come back to the forum for some answers. You could save yourself a lot of trouble.

If it's still running, it's probably not that bad just yet. It's probably a sensor that has failed.
