Default New guy here

Hey everyone, I bought an 06 Azera SE about 3 months ago. Great car and by reading other posts, im learning a lot about this thing.

A little backstory, im 24 and have owned a few little 4 bangers that make a lot of noise. I now drive 700 miles a week for work, and needed something softer, and more comfortable, and automatic. This one had 21k and was 12 grand. No leather no sunroof no nothing, thats how I like them.

Anyways, I was wondering a couple things. Is that the same motor as the eclipse? They look really similar and put out the same numbers, and really sound similar. This will help me cuz i used to work for a mitsubishi dealership and still get an employee discount on parts.

If this is the same motor in the Genesis as well, theyre advertising like 306 hp. Do I need to change the ecu to make that power? Or maybe a bored out cylinder head? I know im probably the only person in america trying to hype up an Azera, but why not?

I also figured out how to put on a cheap, and easy to install air intake that probably added like 5hp and 2mpg. It voids the warranty but it takes 5 minutes to revert to stock. I will share that info if anybody wants it.

Short answer, no. Long answer, it is well known that Hyundai used Mitsubishi engines for the first 10 or 15 years that Hyundai sold cars in the U.S. The two companies continue to collaborate on engine designs, so similarities are not surprising. In this case, the Eclispe 3.8 liter V6 is a cast iron block engine with SOHC heads, a displacement of 3,828 cc, bore of 3.74" and stroke of 3.54". The Lambda 3.8L V6 in the Azera is an all aluminum design with DOHC heads, 3,778 cc displacement, bore of 3.78" and stroke of 3.43". I doubt there is much, if any, part interchangeability.

Yes, basically the same engine down to the displacement, bore and stroke. I would guess that in addition to more aggressively programed PCM, the Genesis version has different cams, throttle body, injectors, exhaust and possibly intake.

There is another forum on the Internet called "Crooked H" that is more performance oriented. You might find kindred spirits there.

Go for it, but I personally think these intakes are a waste of money. Unless a person wants to take the time to change the cam timing, upgrade the PCM and modify the exhaust, the engine really can't take advantage of a larger intake to produce more ponies. These intakes do remove the resonators, which produces more noise and does tend to produce more testosterone. I think you will find the 3.8 liter pretty responsive without such a modification.

Enjoy your new ride.

Thanks for the info about the mitsubishi/hyundai difference. That makes sense.

You may want to change your thoughts on open air intakes, tho. I still have my "resonators" attached, I just modified the air filter a bit. I also reset the ECU, which changes A/F ratio. With proper exhaust mods (which I did), this motor is pretty potent! I've been working on cars half my life, so i know what im talking about. The tuners have not cracked into this segment, and this is a shame.

Im sorry im late to respond but ive been busy. If im wrong, let me know.

Again, thanks.
