1997 Lantra (auto) won't go into drive immediately
Hi there,
I own a 1997 Hyundai Lantra with automatic transmission. When the engine is at air temperature and I put it in drive, the gears don't connect right away. I have to shift them through 1, 2 and D a few times and eventually it's OK after a few minutes, especially if I move the car of in 1 and shift up.
This problem doesn't occur if the engine is warm, even if it hasn't been running for a couple of hours.
Any ideas on what this problem might be and how to fix?
thanks very much,
Metsavend.

I agree with jrstroh_96 comments, but I would start by simply checking the fluid in the transmission. Low ATF levels will cause erratic shifting. As the fluid warms up it expands and shifting improves if the level is only marginally low.
