2013 Elantra Nu 1.8 Engine
I bought a 2013 Elantra with a Nu 1.8 engine in February for my college age daughter. It had 79,000 miles on it when purchased. My 2 daughters left for a sister's vacation this past Saturday and 3 hours into the trip the engine stopped running with 86,000 miles on it. Not a good father's situation when your kids are sitting on the side of a highway by themselves several hours away. Was able to get the car towed to a local place and the girls picked up. Sunday myself and a buddy went and towed the vehicle back home. Read codes which were P0442, P0455, P0300, P0301, and P0302. Mechanic looked at it said there is no compression in 2 cylinders, the timing chain appears broke, and valves bent. Got on the internet and found out that engine from 2011-2016 is considered the worst engine Hyundai built and they knew there were a lot of problems with it but never did any recalls. Hyundai's 10 yr / 100,000 mile warranty is for the first owner and I was given a 2 mo / 2,000 mile warranty. Now to replace the engine cause it is shot will cost more then what the car is worth and what I owe. I have only made 4 payments on the car and my daughter is devestated.
