Default 99 Elantra Won't start

Hi Guys - for the record I've searched the different threads on this issue and have done some troubleshooting based on the great information that I've found. But, I'm still at a loss. Car indicated that it was running off - temp gauge went high off of scale. GF pulled off the road and once the car was stopped it cut off and has not restarted. I figure the off of scale hi might just be an indication problem of the motor trying to cut off. Based on just having the head gasket replaced, head shaved, water pump replaced, new hoses and new radiator - shouldn't be overheating. BACK to not starting - I pulled a plug, verified spark from both coils - smelled gas from spark plug opening. Got spark and gas - car will not start - new battery also.

Where do I go next??

How many miles are on the engine and has the timing belt ever been changed?

Car has 165k miles on it - just replaced the timing belt wih the other work - had the since new - always kept it maintained. I just pulled the camshaft sensor and check it for cracks etc.. Looks good. My son who had the car while in HS removed the airbox and installed an after market KN filter. Found a sensor laying loose, believe its from the old airbox. Could this cause problems?

I'd also check the crank sensor.

It was replaced a couple of years - first time. Is there a test for this? I thought if I had spark, the sensor was working?

Pulled off crankshaft sensor - can't tell nothing from looking at it. Ordered new one from O'Reilly's will be in this afternoon. $73 for lifetime warranty replacement. I'll post after I put it on and try it....

Okay - changed out the crank sensor - nothing new. You can get the excess fuel to ignite if you pump the accelerator while turning the engine. I feel good about having spark and gas. I'm guessing it has to be timing - maybe cam shaft sensor - maye the ECM? Any way to troubleshoot these??

Update - pulled outlet from fuel filter - cranked car and had a solid flow of gas. Pulled each plug wire and tested spark with screw driver - good spark. Replaced crankshaft sensor - pull camshaft sensor - no cracks. Check timing belt - its in place was replaced last month. Read on hmaservice that if injector won't work them bad crank/camshaft sensor - pulled connector on injector, got 7vdc when cranked. Okay - I've got spark at each cylinder - fuel through fuel filter. What am I missing ???
