Android Auto for GPS: Is the USB Port Required?
Hello, everyone. I just leased a 2021 Elantra SEL and would like some advice and suggestions about something, please.
I was told I could hook up my Android phone to the car, and it would display the GPS on the navigation screen. I thought that was great. After doing a bit of research, it seems you have to keep the phone connected to the USB port in order to do this. Am I correct?
If I'm correct, then that poses a problem: I listen to music in the car via MP3 files on a USB flash drive. If the phone has to be connected to the navigation system via the USB port, then I can't have both the phone connected and the flash drive connected.
Or, can it be done strictly via Bluetooth? If so, that solves the problem. However, if the USB port is absolutely required, then I have to find an alternative to using the display as a GPS. (I'd rather have my own music than the radio.)
So, I was thinking about this…how about I use a cupholder mount for the phone, use the phone as the GPS display, and keep it connected via the 12 volt socket, instead of the USB port? If this is the only way to do this, then I was hoping someone would be willing to recommend a good cupholder mount that will be compatible with the cupholders in the 2021 Elantra SEL.
I have a car vent mount that is very stable, but it won't fit these new vents. Apparently, a cupholder mount would be more practical.
What's my best course of action here? Thank you! Jd
