Default Changing Transmission Fluid 100,000+ miles

I own a 2001 Elantra and have 120,000 miles on it. I want to take it in to Pep Boys to have the transmission fluid changed. It is the original transmission fluid. I was told it is best to take it to a transmission shop when the fluid is over 100,000 miles since the removal could cause damage due to the potential presence of dirt. Hence, you need a specialist.

Is this true or would Pep Boys or a standard auto shop be okay for a transmission fluid change?

1. Your trans fluid should be changed every 30,000 miles, not every 100,000 miles.

You will see under the "Severe" Usage schedule you need to replace the trans fluid every 30K miles or 48 months if you:
- B. Extensive engine idling or low speed driving for long distances
- C. Driving on rough, dusty, muddy, unpaved, graveled or salt- spread roads
- D. Driving in areas using salt or other corrosive materials or in very cold weather
- E. Driving in sandy areas
- F. Driving in heavy traffic area over 90°F (32°C)
- G. Driving on uphill, downhill, or mountain road

Most cars on the road today need to be maintained under the "Severe" usage schedule and therefore need the trans fluid changed every 30K miles

2. I wouldn't trust PepBoys to put air in my tires.
