DIY Check Engine Light

Fair enough. If he has an Android phone I highly recommend the Torque Pro app in the Android market and a bluetooth ODB2 reader. The ELM327 bluetooth adapter is pretty cheap on eBay. Total cost of ownership would be right around $20 for a very nice and very capable OBD2 scanner. I've never done it but if you have a laptop with bluetooth you can use that with other software to connect to the ELM327. From what I understand there isn't any software that will connect to the ELM327 over bluetooth because Apple charges device makers a fee to be able to interface with iPhones over bluetooth.
