Hello All, I was hoping to tap into the knowledge base here for some help with a little problem that I am having with my 2001 Elantra . I recently had to replace both driver and passenger side drive axels (did the job myself). The job I think went pretty smooth. I followed the directions in the haynes guide to get the job done. I drain the transaxel oil and replaced it with 2.6 quarts of new transaxel oil. The problem that I am having is this: when I started my car everything was fine until I got to about 55-60 miles per hour. When I reach these higway speeds my engine light comes on and the error code is P0501. I searched on this site and saw that it is the vehicle speed sensor. Now I know when I removed the passenger side drive axel that the one of the speed sensors was screwed to the dust cover of that RF wheel. I did unscrew the nut to get this line out of my way but did not tear or put any undo stress on that line. Now the speedometer works fine and the car is a stick shift and there are no wierd noises coming from the transmission area so I am baffled by this problem. What is even more wierd is that I removed the battery cable hoping to reset the ecm and that worked as long as i did not get up to 55-60 mph. I drove my car intown for a few hours and no engine light, but the minute I got on the freeway the engine light came on and the scan tool showed P0501. Any help or guideance that you guys could give me would be extrelemy helpful. Also, sorry for the long post.

I would take the speed sensor back out and make sure you put it back in properly, i.e. the gasket didn't get distorted. It won't work properly if the sensor is dirty, or if it's the wrong clearance from the disk. Maybe you damaged the sensor?

 

Thanks for the speedy response jsinton but i did not remove the sensor from the steering knuckle just the wire clamp that held the line to the dust cover. But I do wonder if the sensor got dirty when i had the drive axel out? I'll try removing the sensor and giving it a good cleaning and see if that solves the problem.
