Default gearbox problem??

Hi, I'm a typical female...useless at anything to do with car engines except putting oil & fuel in.

I have a 1996 Lantra and the gears have become really stiff when changing up and down. Does anyone know what the best solution is for this?

Default RE: gearbox problem??

Are you sure the clutch is actuating enough? Do you press the clutch all the way to the floor? Is the clutch fluid full?

Perhaps is has lost the gearbox oil. There's a drainplug on the bottom of the transaxle, and a fill plug near the front of the car on the transaxle above the drainplug. Take out the fillplug and make sure it's full to the top. Manual transaxle fluid is special stuff 80/90 weight, will say gear oil on the bottle. The capacity in the transaxle is 2.6 quarts I think. If you lost the transaxle fluid, it means one of the axle seals is probably bad, or you lost a driveaxle snap ring and the driveaxle moves around too much and allows oil to spill out the seal. Good luck.
