Idle Revving Out Of Control Or Stalling
That is 2000 Elantra 1.6 DOHC, 110HP, 5 door, manual shift, bought and driven in Europe. My parents own it and are first owners.
The symptoms:
1. revving up when trying to stop at the traffic lights, so the foot is on the clutch. Revving up when try to get to lower gear
2. a few times stalled out at low speeds
3. on keeping the foot on the gas pedal constantly. No acceleration sometimes it feels jerky, like the car is loosing power for a few moments and then continues normally
4. at no time does the check engine light turns on
Surfing the web possible problem zones can be:
- MAF - Mass Airflow Sensor and it's harness/wiring
- TPS - Throttle Position Sensor
- ISC - Idle Speed Control
- you have any other suggestion? Is the ECU on the model faulty? Does that have something to with the O2 sensor wiring and ECU fuse?
The 3rd symptom does not have to be in correlation with the first two.
Can the 3rd problem be related to
- air intake problem
- fuel supply system problem
- just bad sparks
- anything else?
Thank you for your help!

Having the same problem with a 2004 Elantra with AT. Started taking it into the shop at 55,000 miles (now almost 140,000.)
Since the engine light never goes on, they can't find any codes. It is also intermittent, so sometimes the shop won't notice anything. Seems better in hot weather.
I've been living with it, but would sure be nice to get it fixed!

Could be this...
Hey guys. So my parents have an Elantra with the same quirks. How did my mechanic fix it... well... to the gas pedal is attached a little throttle to digital signals converter. It looks like a plastic box shaped like a letter T. In the middle is a hole for the axle that connects gas pedal with the converter it has two screw holes and on the long end a connector for the cable that probably goes into the ECU.
After it was replaced there are no problems at all. No revving out of control in idle and crazy things like that. At the end I could have even provoke it to go crazy by just gently touching the gas pedal a couple of time.
Hope it helps. I also can try to look for the faulty part somplace home. Mechanic gave it to me so I can read the model number and stuff.
