Hyundai Elantra While not much larger than the accent, the Elantra offers similar room, but a sportier look and feel, as well as more power.

Default MPG with 2011 Elantra

Just wondering what other 2011 Elantra owners are experiencing for MPG (actual manual computation not what is displayed on trip computer display). The primary selling point when we purchased mine was the '47' MPG we would get and thereby reduce my gas consumption. This was the sales person's and the business manager's rationalization for us having a slightly higher ($40.00) monthly payment because we would be saving so much money compared to the 32 MPG I was getting with the KIA Rio5 I was driving. Well, I get 34.6 MPG overall (with 90% minimum highway driving) which is not close to the EPA 40 MPG and a far cry from the 47 MPG they promoted. The best MPG I have gotten on a single tank is 36.8, again not anywhere near the 47 MPG mark. Let's hear what others are getting. Maybe my experience is a one off. If so then the dealer and the Hyundai company will have no problem resolving my issue to my satisfaction. I really don't want to initiate a class-action law suit.

Default 2011 Elantra MPG

I have a 2011 Elantra GLS I purchased new in April 2011. It now has 39,000 miles (I drive a LOT).

I purchased this car because it was way roomier than the Cruize and Focus, and also because of the advertised MPG.

I have NEVER gotten 40mpg. I drive almost 95% highway. I have always had the tires inflated 34-35PSI (I now have Michelin tires on car). I typically get 32mpg - 34mpg (mot much more than the 2010 Impala I traded in - I wish I kept that).

I have gotten 38.3mpg. I use Mobil1 5-20 pure synthetic, have tried super unleaded (as well as plus), replaced air filter (and tried a K&N). As an ASE Certified Master Tech, I can honestly say I didn't EXPECT any of these to affect MPG - but I was curious.

My AVG MPG is closer to 32 now that I had to replace OEM tires and I used Michelin Harmony tires (NOT low rolling resistance, but much longer lasting).

If there were a class-action against Hyundai I would be EXTREMELY interested. I called their customer support to no avail - they said to check my tire pressure - give me a break (I check it weekly). I expected and wanted more than a canned response.

On the flip side - with 39K, I haven't had ONE SINGLE issue with car (no brake rotor warpage, no rough idling, no clunks. The seat material stains WAY too easily, blue-tooth sometimes doesn't sync and needs resetting (those are the downsides besides MPG).

I would have laughed at the salesman that said 47 mpg. The Elantra is rated at 40 mpg on the highway and 29 mpg in the city. Nowhere does Hyundai advertise 47 mph. You should have done better research before believing the salesman. 34 to 36 mpg in mixed driving is normal. There is nothing wrong with your car.

The driver has a greater affect on mpg than almost anything else. Sure, highway mileage is rated at 40 but that's at 55-mph. Are you driving 55-mph or faster? Mileage drops as speeds increase. How about the A/C, is it on? That lowers mileage as well.

For me, in the 39K I've put on, have tried setting cruise at 60MPH without A/C (BTW - A/C on or off makes hardly any difference in my economy). I have also used my GPS to calculate distance driven (since my speedo is approx 2.3% off) - I CANNOT reach 40MPG. PERIOD.

I do not feel ANYTHING is wrong with my car. I just cannot believe Hyundai can get away with over inflating EPA ratings by that much.

Interestingly, Hyundai omitted the spare to lighten vehicle to achieve 40MPG. I purchased a full-size rim and have a spare in my trunk. I haven't noticed ANY difference in economy.

I would NEVER rely on a salesperson, and would be HAPPY to get 37-38 MPG highway. I am USUALLY able to exceed rated MPG on other vehicles.

My 2011 Elantra doesn't get much better (if at all) than my 2010 Impala.

But 25-28 combined and 32-34 highway is FAR lower than what I expected from a car rated at 29/40 using 2008 and newer EPA ratings.

Attached is a pic of current mileage and economy. Less than 26MPG driving 65% highway (and yes, my tires are properly inflated).

My wife averages 33 mpg all city driving but only 20 miles a day. But we did get 39 avg. on 600 mile round trip. To the beach. I was satisfied. But my 2012 accent gets 42 avg 90% highway 10% city. Much better than my g8's 19
