Notice for all 2001 - 2006 Elantra owners
In lieu of the running recall for rusted frame/arms on 2001 - 2003 models, I would suggest that owners up to 2006 look at their arms, and if you see
rubber plugs in the arms.... remove them so as to not retain water and corrode like what the recall is doing now...
Remove the plugs so all the water can escape.. the large rubber plug is in same place we is drilling hole for inspect, and leaving open...
The 2 smaller plugs, we is actually drilling a 12mm hole center just a wee bit farther away from the ball joint there, and it stays open to allow woter to drain.. so remove the rubber plugs on both arms.

Udate -
Tech across shop had old Elantra for frame/arm recall this morning, it had the replacement arms done a while ago,, (new style replacements sold across counter with the rubber plugs).. those arms were rotted through.
Arms in the recall kit is the same part, but without the rubber plugs to allow drainage..
Look at your arms, and pull those rubber plugs out.

Too late, my 2002 Elantra has been in the shop for a month now, waiting for parts (control arms and sub-frame), probably won't see it until May sometime they told me. Hyundai won't offer any type of loaner or any "freebies", they just keep telling me to be patient. Don't know how much more patience I have.

A month???????????????????????????????
We had parts for same day service for a while.. Hyundai has just recently put the hurt on all of us, they will not sell us parts unless we have a VIN, and car tore down.. that is a severe waste of techs time, and dis-service to the customer.

Dealership service aisle.... have advisor run VIN on DCS for warranty info... recalls be on ceter of page if any open...
1 - SRS wire kit and possible rain coat install to SRSCM (depend on production date)
2 - frame / arm inspection (drill and apply coating or replacement), drop car in morning, usually done by closing, unless they do not have parts to do the repair (see couple post up)
3 - brake tube clip (piece of plastic spacer installed to brake line)
4 - fuel cut valve (add on roll over valve)
5 - exhaust manifold inspect / replacment for crack of iron manifold above catalyst (exhaust leak / goofs ox sensor value to PCM)
Those is the main items I see everyday.

Here we go -- ffirst pic shows the new style arms with rubber plugs (OE to vehicle from Hyundai)
Second pic shows the plugs removed... this is how they come in the arm kit from Hyundai,,, so get them out so you do not rot the arms like the first style.... why Hyundai has not issued notice to peel the OE arms is beyond me... must want to carry recall into future with 2nd wave of rotted arms..

I received my recall for 2003 Elantra on Dec 18, 2009. Note: Letter had NO date on it! In Feb my mechanic said it wasn't pressing to get the arms changed. When I went for oil change Apr 30th he said to get right arm changed within 2 weeks. He could put his hammer through it in 2 or 3 places. *I have not received a second letter yet!*
I phoned 2 dealerships (Belleville, Ontario and Mississauga, Ontario) and they said I would have to leave the car and they don't give a loaner car! They also said they didn't have the part and it was on back order! They had no idea when the part might come in.
I ended up buying a second car (2004 Elantra) as I'm on the road everyday with my job and I drive to my Mums every other weekend to help her, 3 hours away in Mississauga. I left my 2003 Elantra there May 6th to be fixed. The Belleville dealership is an hour away. I couldn't risk a tire falling off on the Trans Canada highway. I picked up the '03 Elantra on May 14th. They replaced the controls arms and waxed and undercoated the subframe. There was no charge.
@sbr711 - Thanks for the heads up about the plugs. I will have my mechanic check next time I go
I think it's terrible the way Hyundai is treating this recall so lightly! Sadly, just wait till somebody gets injured or worse, killed.
