Default Oil pan replacement

2001 Elantra GT - stripped oil pan and need to replace. Does the engine need to be removed to do this or is oil pan just bolted on? Also is there a gasket to be replaced or do you just use rtv silicone to put on?

Having a hard time finding a new oil pan. Dealership wants to charge $240 for a stupid aluminum pan, any suggestions?

You sould be able to remove the pan with the engine in the car. Yes, you will need a new gasket and some RTV would probably help. However, instead of getting a new (or used) pan, have to thought of just tapping the drain plug opening to a slightly larger size and getting a new, larger drain plug?

How exactly do you go about tapping it? What tools are needed and any ideas on size?

You really need to have a time-sert installed in it. A time sert is metal threads installed in a alluminum pan. They are better than factory. Most shops charge an hour to do this and about 20 bucks in parts. Now if ya gonna change the pan there is no gasket its only rtv. Remove all the oil pan bolts (look at shop manual). In the back where the pan meets by bellhousing there are some threads in the pan itself you take a 8 by 1.25 threaded bolt and screw in there this will break pan loose from block. I believe exhaust has to be dropped also. We used to do like 4 a week ( I love fast oil change places). As vehicles get older we dont see em that much anymore.

$240 just for the oil pan? That's overpricing.. The price of the oil pan gasket set should be around 170 tp 200 bucks.
