Is there any way to improve manual trans ratios?
I have a 2006 Elantra and I'm very happy with it overall. BUT, are there gears or a different transmission that would swap out that have a bit taller gearing?
I live in Phoenix and it's pretty damned flat here. I do travel back and forth to SoCal frequently and at just over 80mph (which isn't far off the surface street limit here in Phoenix!) I'm spinning around 3500 rpm. I would dearly love to put in a higher 4th and 5th gear or at least 5th, whatever would get my rpm down under 3k. Most of the time I don't bother with 4th gear at all just go from 3rd to 5th.
This thing pulls great so I know it could handle a little taller gearing.
And, yes, I thought of taller tires but that throws off the speedometer and odometer. Besides, 1st and 2nd are just fine with the tires on there now.
Suggestions/ideas/prayers appreciated

I've got an 08 Accent, the speed limit heading outside Las Vegas are 75 and up mine seems to go fine, the humming noise of the engine sounds great for about an hour. I'd like to know what you find out, perhaps I can save my ears. =D I think there is something you can buy to communicate with your speedo to tell the true speed of the car and revs but I am not sure.
I suppose the next step if it's not powerful enough for the new gear ratio, putting a little more power into it.

I just use my GPS to read out the actual MPH. I show about 3 high at 70-85. My Elantra has plenty of power to pull some taller gears without mods. I can pull Mountain Springs grade into San Diego almost all the way with the AC on at a bit over 70 in 5th. I usually get caught behind some traffic and can't get back up on plane though so I finish the climb in 4th.
