I have a 2002 Sonata GLS with the 2.7 engine.
I can start the engine and it runs for approx. 1 1/2 seconds.
Then it chokes & coughs and shuts down
I can start it again and again but it won't keep running
And it smells like gas after I start it a couple of times
Sure would appreciate ideas on this one

Try starting the engine with the throttle full open.
It sounds like the engine is being flooded.

 

Finally found the problem!
It was misfiring back up through the intake manifold because of a bad gasket in between the manifold and block. A portion folded and I had a leak.
Taking it to work today!!
