Default 2004 Getz CRDi speedometer problem

I have a problem with the speedometer in a '04 Getz CRDi. The speedometer stops working intermittently: sometimes it works perfectly, sometimes it doesn't work at first but resumes working after driving a while, lately it has most often not been working at all.

The solution suggested by the Hyundai service center is to replace the whole instrument panel, which costs about 1000 EUR new. It seems that they don't know what is wrong and don't bother to determine it. One possibility that comes to mind is that the problem could be not with the speedometer, but with the sensor instead, and in that case the very costly replacement of the instrument panel wouldn't help in the first place. Any suggestions?

I found a used instrument panel from a 2007 Hyundai Getz 1.1i 12V from a car dismantler, with a price tag of 135 EUR. Does anybody know whether that would fit a 2004 CRDi? The tachometer is different in CRDi, but it is working perfectly in the old instrument panel, so perhaps it could be transferred to the replacement panel?

We don't have the Getz here in the states but my guess is the wheel speed sensor is bad. It's located usually on the right front wheel.
