Default Air bag problems

The air bag light came on in my 2003 Santa Fe. I took it into the dealer and was told that it was the air bag harness. It was "fried" and it would cost $900.00 to replace. Has anyone else had this problem?
How hard is it to replace? Where could I purchase a new harness?

That's not a job you should take on unless you are trained to do so.

What was the code ??

I have not seen a harness in Santa Fe.

Only real part I have seen replaced is the spiral cable (clock spring) on the steering column for a DAB low code..

"Fried" is not a valid technical term, Hyundai would bounce a warranty claim faster than a heart beat if we used the word "FRIED" in a claim.

Default Air Bag

The service tech did not give me a code number. I had taken it in due to a recall and ask them to check out the problem with the air bag light on the dash thingking it would me something minor. He just said that it looked fried or sizzled and was a real mess. I wasn't there when they looked at it so I really don't know a whole lot about it. But my understanding was it was the wireing and that warrenties do not cover electrical parts. I assumed that it was a part of a wiring harness due to how he stated the problem. Sounds like maybe I should get a second opinion.

Correct, second, third opinion baed off of "scanned SRS module, codes B-xxxx, B-xxxx, and so forth with proper description of each code as it appear on the Hi-Scan or GDS screen.

Preferably ask that they use the GDS, and print the screen that shows the DTC's and definition of DTC in its respective line..... Don't take "no" for an answer, as it is required to document and attach to RO if it was a warranty claim, so they can print the screen...

This is the reply I got from the service department that checked out the air bag light problem:

The code was #B1620 not a wiring issue, instead an internal failure of the SRCM. It looks like and new SRS module is needed $914.14 last summers estimate. If you would like we would be more than happy to recheck and confirm @ no charge. Should take about 45 mins. I am sure the diagnoses is correct however the tech that looked at in in August is the shop foreman. Feel free to call or email with any other questions.

Take the $914 and make a couple house payments... something that will appreciate... rather than a depreciated motor vehicle..

B-1620 is an internal SRSCM fault --> Replace SRSCM.. see it more often with Elantra, as liquid spills is easier to drown the module.

If you decide to spend money on cotrol unit, you can do it yourself and save the labor, rather simple to do.
