Default Flashing Auto Light Sensor

What causes the auto light sensor located by defrost vents to flash when engine is off?

The blinking light on the dash indicates the theft alarm system has been activated. The blinking light should only be evident if the engine is off and the doors are locked. It should not blink if the doors are not locked.

My light doesn't stay on, but I can't seem to disengage it. I have tried everything from the manual and it still hasn't disengaged. Any suggestions?
