Slow Acceleration and also a AWD question.

Slow Acceleration and also a AWD question.
Ok so, we have an AWD. Is the AWD the kind thats all the time or is it whenever it slips it goes to AWD?Also we have the 2.7V6 and Auto. It seems to not have very good acceleration. It also seems to not want to downshift going up steeper hills. It stays in 3rd and revs to about 5k RPM and just stays there for probably 30sec or so before it finally shifts to OD. Is this normal?(I'm thinking not) Oh, and after driving it up this hill it starts to smell hot. The temp gauge is normal but it just smells hot.
The main road to my mom-in-laws is a 8% grade for just about a mile. We go there just about everyday so it's gonnabreak something,if something is wrong. I really don't want that to happen.

RE: Slow Acceleration and also a AWD question.
Your AWD system works as FWD until it detects slip than it sends power to the rear. If you activate the 4WD Lock you get locked 4WD up to about 30-35 mph than it unlocks and works the same as when it's unlocked.
The 2.7L was a little weak for the Santa Fe, especially with AWD. That's why the 3.5L V6 was optional.

I think you must have the full time 4 wheel drive option on your Santa Fe, which means no levers, switches, etc. It's always in 4 wheel drive. Read page 2-18 of your owners manual. I have a Ford Explorer equiped the same way. Not the best for mileage, but safer for inexperienced drivers.

How do you activate the 4WD? There is no buttons or levers that I see.

Any other opinions on the shifting, other than it's not a big enough motor?
I mean I've had other cars and suv's with close to the same H.P. or lessand they never seemed underpowered and over rev'ed going up these hills.

I probably wouldn't have to ask these questions but unfortunatally it DID NOT come with a manual. The dealer said he would get us one, but I really doubt that.

PDF versions of all owner manuals are available on the Hyundai service site at http://www.hmaservice.com/. You have to use Internet Explorer and you have to register to use the site. Download the required viewers, including the Acrobat Reader, if none are already installed. Once you have logged in, double click on "Shop". The next screen will have tabs along the top, one of them is titled "OM". Click on "OM", then select the model and year fromm the drop down boxes. On the left hand side will be listed the PDF documentation that was originally distributed with the vehicle including the owners manual. Clicking on any of these will open them on the right hand side. All can be saved to the local computer. The manual files are large, so patience is a virtue.
