Default Vehicle Speed Sensor code 0501

I have a few questions regarding the speed sensors on a 2001 santa fe 2.7L V6 AWD. The check engine light is on, so hooked up the code reader and got a 1529 - 0501, which says there is a problem with the vehicle speed sensor. I've also noticed that occasionally the tachometer will sometimes drop down to zero and then come back up again, so I'm thinking that this might be a problem associated with the speed sensor.

The question is, how many speed sensors are on the vehicle?...I've read that there is an:
  1. Input speed sensor
  2. Output speed sensor
  3. Vehicle speed sensor and a
  4. Wheel speed sensor
The info that I seem to gather is that the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is the same as the Output Speed Sensor?

Can someone supply photos and descriptions of each of these sensors for clarification please?

Thanks,

Jas

VSS is something unique from an output speed sensor. I think the VSS is part of your instrument cluster on your dash. OSS is on the output flange of your transmission.

Your particular 2001 V6 SF seems to have a VSS mounted on the transmission. This is the one throwing the P0501 code.

The speedometer mounted type VSS are found on Accents.
