Default 09 Sonata 30k Mile Service Question

My 30k service is going to be due very shortly. I've called both local Hyundai dealers for pricing and was quoted $399 by one and $471 by the other. I asked both if it would be ok to take teh car to be serviced at any shop and they said yes as long as I document everything. But one told me that my free oil changes for life that I have with them would be voided if I went to anyone other than a daler and the other told me to make sure I get all the names of all the brands of fluids used by the shop as certian brands may void the warranty all together. WTF How can you find out what bnrands are acceptable. this is BS.

You have a few questions. I'll try to answer them all:

1. No, you do not have to go to a dealer to keep your warranty.

2. If you go to another mechanic, that mechanic must use fluids, filters and parts that meet or exceed the Hyundai requirements or Hyundai could void your warranty. Hyundai used a very specific automatic transmission fliud (SP-III). If a non-dealer mechanic changes your fluid and does not know that, he could ruin your trans and void your warranty.

3. If you go to another mechanic, you need to keep good records of the maintenance performed or they can void your warranty.

4. The dealer that gave you free oil changes for life can stop that if you break their rules. Free oil changes for life is not part of Hyundai's service. That's was something the dealer chose to provide you and you must meet their requirements to keep it.

Personally, I've found the dealers to be good deals on the work. I've done 3 different 30K services on 3 different Hyundai/Kia vehicles. All 3 times I had the oil changed, the tires rotated, the trans flushed (not just drain the pan) and the coolant replaced. The costs were as follows:

My 2004 Tiburon GT V6 cost me $351.87 but did not include the cabin air filter replacement (I already changed it) or an engine air filter replacement (I had replaced the factory air filter assembly with an aftermarket intake and K&N filter).

My 2006 Tucson V6 cost me $532.07.

My 2006 Kia Sedona cost me $475.64.

In my opinion, I think $399 or $471 are not bad prices.
