Based on personal experience, the life of the water pump is based on mileage and how well the cooling system has been serviced. I routinely flush and refill my cars every fall and usually add a can of an aftermarket water pump lubricant to the system. My aforementioned 95 Taurus just lost it's original pump at 190K. Except for my Hyundais (they are fairly recent puirchases), the remaining three cars in my fleet have 120K to 160K, all with the original pump in place. But most people don't service their cars this well, so I would expect the pumps to typically last 100K to 120K. While I think the replacement of an otherwise sound pump at the first timing belt change (60K) is unnecessary, I would agree replacing the water pump at 120K is a defendable decision particularly if you plan to keep the car for some time.
