2002 Sonata and Catalytic Converters
Hi All,
I have a 2002 Hyundai Sonata. I recently took it to a car repair center due to a loss in power. They informed me that the catalytic converters were bad and would need to be replaced. The total cost would be approx. $3000, with 120,000 miles on the car I was not interested. So I have decided to try and make it a DIY project. I have a couple questions….
1. Are there really 3 catalytic converters on this model? (one of the front three cylinders, one on the rear three cylinders, and one in the back)?
2. The bolts are rusted together and I cannot get them to turn. I have tried hammering on smaller sockets and using WD-40……what is next?
3. Any other suggestions or thoughts?

1. Correct
2. Sawsall,cutoff wheel, torch
3. Take it back and pay the mechanic to do the work or sell the car. Seriously, the mechanic is trained and has the correct tools. That's why some repairs cost so much. However, I'd suggest finding a different mechanic. $3000 sounds a little steep.
