2008 sonata 4 cyl GLS city 21MPG / 30MPG
I am new 2008 Hyundai Sonata GLS owner. I was told by the salesman that i should get 21 MPG in city and 30 MPG on highway. Is that true? I have driven 450 miles in city so far and my average is 16.5 MPG. My trip computer shows the average speed was 11 MPH (normal for Seattle..[sm=smiley6.gif]). Although it is hard to believe, i wanted to hear from you on how good others are doing?

Forget anything a salesman tells you; what does the sticker say? If you don't have the sticker, you can look it up at epa.gov.
That said, the mileage on Hyundais tends to increase after a few thousand miles.

Your average speed of 11 MPH means you are doing a LOT of stop and go driving. Remember that when you are stoped you are getting ZERO MPG. I assume you have the automatic trans as the trip computer is only availible on the 08 GLS with an auto trans and the popular equipment package. My 08 GLS I bought on Dec 23 has the 5 speed manual and the trip computer is not availible.
I drive 100 miles a day in my commute to work. This is about 60 to 70 percent higjhway driving depending on the traffic. I averaged about 35MPG with my 2004 Elantra 5 speed after it was broken in. I got 32 MPG on the first tank of gas on my 08 Sonata. Got 30 MPG on the second tank and 32 MPG on the third tank. I had an 07 Sonata limited V6 auto as a loaner for a week and averaged 27 MPG. The average speed on the trip computer was about 30 MPH. The 4 cylinder Sonata is capable of really excellent fuel economy. The problem is that stop and go driving in areas with a lot of hills really burns the gas.
Hopefully your gas mileage will increase as the car breaks in. Im really happy with my Sonata so far.

I have an '08 Sonata, 6.5k miles since end of Feb. I have a round trip of 90 miles, of which about 10 miles are on 30-40 mph roads. The rest of the time is about 80 mph, ahem, sorry officer. I still get 28.5 - 29.5 depending on how hard I hit the 'go' pedal. I have even managed to get a 34 mpg average (at 65mph) by resetting the trip computer once I'd got onto the Interstate!

In my 6 cyl I get around 26 as an average. 50% city and 50% highway. I actually put my CAI on yesterday and reset it while cruising at 50 and it was 38.5MPG!! Of course it goes down, but I never thought I'd see that. Get on the highway set cruise and reset it and see what it says.
