Default Sonata - Engine Noise - Any comment please?

I have a Sonata - Australian delivery made in 1998 - thru to 2000. Same shape up to 2005.
The car is the 4 cyl 16 valve DOHC. Yes it's a bit gutless. (Should have got the 2.4 6cyl.)
I am new to Hyundai, but is it normal for these engines to make a fair bit of noise?
I mean it sounds okay - but just noisier than other similar cars - like Toyotas, for example.
I would have thought the 16-vale DOHCshould be pretty quite and smooth. Sounds more like a truck engine.

Sometimes I wonder if it may have a water pump bearing noise or some other noise that should not be there.
Runs okay however.

Thanks guys.

SOUNDS MORE LIKE A TRUCK ENGINE¿?¿?! I love my 5.9L V8! Its naturally noisy and a pushrod engine at that, so noise is to be expected. Afterall, I didn't buy it for being quiet or for efficiency. My 2.5L spirit made a lot of noise with the 3 speed automatic (no OD). The engine turned a quick 2750rpm at 60mph, which seemed high to me. My truck at the same speed turns 1900rpm (3.92 axle with 30" tires and 0.70 OD).

The general consensus is that the smaller the engine (especially ones with low HP ratings), the more rpm's are required to keep the vehicle rolling at a given speed. So, just keep'r under 80mph and the noise won't be as bad!

Hi, I have the same model as you. Have previously had Volvos, Audis and BMWs.

When I changed first I found the Hyundai a little more noisy especially when pulling away and accelerating, but having had it for about a year now, have got used to it, so I don't think it should be too much to worry about, however, you do need to change the oil/filter on a regular basis, about every 3-5000 miles depending on driving conditions.

Hope this helps,

Chris.
