Hyundai Coupe 1.6 S
The Hyundai is a relaxed motorway companion, boasting a relatively compliant ride and low levels of tyre noise. And while it isn't great around town, with potholes causing the suspension to jar, overall the balance struck is acceptable for a sporty two-door coupe. Yet the sporty looking Korean perhaps doesn't handle as well as you'd expect. It's perfectly adequate for most needs, but the faster you go, the worse it becomes. The car starts to feel less stable and the steering is too vague during initial turn-in to a corner. At least the brakes are very strong, and the good-value 2.7-litre V6 engine provides an expensive engine note, if not as much power as you may think. Most Coupes are sold with four-cylinder engines; the 1.6-litre needs revs and good use of the sluggish gearbox, but the 2.0-litre strikes a fair balance between racy feel and ease of use.
