high idle
Hi,
I have a 2003 xg350L the problem is when I first start the car in the morning the car races for a couple seconds then idles down. I would suspect something with the chocke but can't find any info about it. Has anyone else had the problem, and if so what is the cure. Thanks for the help in advance. Rory

RE: high idle
normally when the car is cold on first start up, the rpm will be high(idles high) so the car can get to its operating temp(to operate in closed loop) quickly. if the car is warm when you start it and it idles high then it's a different story.

RE: high idle
well i don't know if this would classify me as a technician but i've been working on hyundais since 1999, and i'm also a HYUNDAIPLATINUM CERTIFIED TECHNICIAN. so when i did ask a question if the car idles high when the car iswarm then you might have an air leak. a mass air flow sensor would not cause a car or the XG to idle high. if it was theidle air control valve it would set a dtc for idle expect high. i'm only trying to help since i'm not around thecar. just making suggestions as anyone onthis forum does.KNOW IT ALL, THAT'S FUNNY. check what the signature says.

RE: high idle
My idle on startup with a warm engine is around 2000 rpm then it quickly goes down to normal idle 600 or 700 rpm. When cold my startup is around 2150 rpm and I can hear values clacking for a few seconds. Just does not seem right...........
Thank you for replying Now I know who is who.

RE: high idle
with the valves making noise on cold startup is a sign of a weak oil pump.few times i changed the oil on 3.0 and 3.5 enginesand when i was ready to start the vehicle i heard it knocking.if your car is still under warranty i would recommend you bring it in for the complaint.i hate to say this again though that it's normalfor them the idle will go up to 2000 rpm just on start up.what you can do is use some carb. cleaner spray it on all intake hose including around intake manifold bolts and check to see if you have any leaks. hope it helps.

RE: high idle
I have a Santa Fe 2.4 FWD 100k miles and i notice the high idle when the car is cold. I carefully read the posts here about high idle being normal on cold starts but from my experience with other cars, the idle should go somewhere around 1500-1800rpm for 2-3 seconds then drop to around 1200 for a few more minutes until the engine gets warmer but my idle is at 1800-2000 for 5 minutes until the engine is almost at half of the operating temperature, then it drops to 600-800.
I had the transmission rebuild 2 time so far and i am starting to suspect that this high idle puts a lot of stress on the transmission, since the first 5-1o minutes every time i use the car the idle is too high, and my wife takes some time to get the car out of the parking spot with the food mostly on the brake.
Is this high idle normal for that long? I was also looking at replacing "idle air control valve" or the "idle speed control motor" or the "throttle position sensor" or the "idle solenoid" but where should i start? which one controls the idle at cold start?
Thanks in advance,
Chris
