Default Loose Rearview Mirror

2005 - How do you get to the fastener that holds the rearview mirror to the mount on the windshield? I'm assuming the plastic cover needs to come off, but how is the cover removed?

I haven't specifically looked at a mirror on a XG350, but all of the mirrors I have repaired usually have a small set screw (slotted, allan or torx style) that secures the mirror to flat metal lug that was glued to the windshield. Loosen the screw and then remove the lug from the mirror. I suppose some may simply slip on and are secured with a spring clip. Those should slip out the slot on the bottom of the mirror with some force. Remember or mark the top and the side facing the driver of the lug so that it is oriented correctly when you glue it back onto the windshield. Repair kits with adhesive can be purchased at any auto parts store and most hardware stores. I've purchased them at Walmart and Kmart in the past. The kit will explain which solvent is best for cleaning the glass and glued face of the lug for the adhesive in the kit.

Ken, I'm sure once the plastic cover is removed the mount is similar. The problem, or question, is how does the cover come off to access the mechanical device holding the mirror in place? It's my neighbor's car and I don't want to mar the plastic cover prying it off. Anyone have an easy way to get the access cover off?

Give your neighbor the screwdriver and let him pry it off.
