Miles to empty gauge

Miles to empty gauge
I have a 2005 XG350L with 6,000 miles on it when I stop at a light the gauge fluctuates to higher miles and when I take of from the light it fluctuates lower miles left. Appears the laws of inertia are effecting the gauge when cars in operation. And the dealership tells me it's normal.
Wasn't normal when I brought the car new. Anyone have any ideals what the problem could be? I'm thinking some sort of fuel sensor that 's in the fuel tank.

Uggh.
Okay. First, it isn't a fuel gauge that measures miles to empty, it is a computer.
It calculates how many miles OR how many minutes you have left at your current fuel consumption.
When you slow down to stop at a light, or travel down hill your MPG increases considerably.
When your MPG increases, the computer reports that you have MORE miles until you will need to fill up, and MORE time.
When you increase your speed your MPG DECREASES considerably, so the computer reports that you have fewer miles or less time until filling up.
PLEASE tell me you guys aren't surgeons or lawyers or something where people's lives depend on your judgment.
