Default timing belt

Hi,

I am thinking of buying an used 2004 Hyundai XG 350L , which has 71k miles on it. While I was browsing websites, I came to know that as per user manual, timing belt needs to be changed at 60K, is that true?

The car which I saw has 71K miles on it, how do I make sure that the timing belt has been replaced?

For curiosity, how much cost it would incur to replace timing belt?

Thanks,
Venkata

That's right, 60K miles. Assume it wasn't changed. You can inspect it by removing the top timing belt cover, or if you're lucky there will be service records.

On a car like that, depending on where you go, and what parts you replace, it can cost between $300 and $1000. Consider it part of the cost of driving, as it's mandatory.

Hi Jsinton,

Thank you very much for your reply. The reason for asking this question is, since the car which I am looking has crossed 60K miles. If the previous owners have not replaced the timing belt, I will have to do it on my own.
Which will definitely cost me around $500 more than the price what they are asking. I saw this car at dealers lot and not sure whether they have service records are not.
.
I will remove top timing belt cover and verify whether it has been changed or not. I appreciate your help.

Thanks,
Venkata

Looking at the belt won't tell you much. Unless the dealer can show proof the belt was changed assume it wasn't. Use that as leverage to get the price down. Tell the dealer you want at least $500 off the price because you have to replace the belt.
