Talking First Time Owner from NorCal, here!

Been lurking for a while, and with the recent purchase of my dad's 2008 Hyundai Accent GS hatch, I figured it was a good time to sign up.

So glad to have my first car finally, even if it's got a few problems. It's a good little runabout for in-city, and that's pretty much all I need it to be, but I do want to get it back into better mechanical shape soon. I look forward to getting some helpful advice from these forums to get my car running as well as she used to.

That's a neat little car for your first one. I like small hatchbacks. Next best thing to a CUV but with better gas mileage.
So what kind of issues does it have?

The trans feels jumpy most of the time, but I've heard the automatic in the MC Accents is generally crappy by default, and I've got a top end problem, either valve stem seals or guides from what I've looked at. For now, it only causes problems when the car is pushed hard or taken on the freeway from Stockton to Sacramento, but following those conditions, it coughs up some oil smoke the morning after.
